Competition Schedule

 General Rules

There must be sufficient coat to allow the groomer to make a distinct change in the dog’s appearance.

  • All styling must take place during the time frame of the competition, except where noted below.

  • All dogs may have sanitary and pads shaved, prior to class start.

  • All dogs may have nails trimmed and ears cleaned, prior to class start.

  • Chalk products are permissible prior to and during the competition time frame, but are prohibited after time is called. 

  • Finishing sprays are permissible in order to tidy up after competition time frame ends however, reshaping with water or product application is prohibited. 

  • There is to be no access to visual, audio, or written grooming instructions during the competition.

  • All photos and videos taken are the property of the GroomfestVA Competition.

 Model Dog Competition

    • This is a full body, model dog competition.

    • You may enter as many times as you would like to. You cannot enter a model dog that has been entered in another competition.

    • There will be two categories: Purebred and Salon Freestyle.

    • Purebred: All AKC breeds in breed trims are accepted. You may manipulate the mannequin/wig to achieve the correct breed standard (change ear or tail sets, lengthen legs, body, or neck, etc). Color is accepted and appropriate per the breed standard (no pinks, blues, greens, etc). No accessories are accepted.

    • Salon Freestyle: Any dog trim NOT to breed standard. The model must look like a dog coming out of the salon on any given day. For example: Asian Fusion, Teddy Bear, Spirals, etc. Up to 20% of color and accessories are accepted. You may manipulate the mannequin/wig to achieve the desired look (change ear or tail sets, etc).

    • All model dog brands and wigs are accepted.

    • Model dogs must be done on your own time outside the ring. Model dogs must be in the ring and on display by 9:45am. They may be on a lazy Susan or a board to make moving the models easier.

 Purebred & Freestyle Competition

    • Time allowance: 3 hours for any breeds of any size!

      Acceptable Breeds

      • Any pure or mixed breeds that require either a haircut or hand stripping.

        • Short haired or double coated breeds are not acceptable.

    • Any trims are permitted. Pure bred dogs can be groomed in the breed profile haircut or in any trims. For example, a poodle can be groomed in all poodle trims both pet and show haircuts, or as another breed like Bedlington Terrier or a Kerry Blue Terrier, or any other breed, Asian Fusion, Teddy Bear etc.. A Cocker Spaniel, Schnauzer or any other breeds can be in a breed profile trim or free style like Asian Fusion. The wire coated or jacketed breeds that are groomed in a breed profile must be groomed according to the breed standard: handstripped /carded. They can be clipped if groomed in a free style

    • Color or accessories are not permitted

    • Poodles in a poodle trim can have their feet shaved prior to the competition

    • The dogs must have at least 6 weeks of hair growth or substantial amount of hair to show the difference

    • There will be a 15 min potty break halfway through the competition.

    • A mentor will be advising all competitors during the competition. Competitors can ask questions about the haircut when the mentor approaches them. The mentor is not allowed to touch the dogs

This is a friendly and super fun competition. This competition is open to all level competitors! 2 groomers and 1 dog.  

Team contest is being judged on both grooming and teamwork. Both groomers can groom the dog at the same time. Don’t forget to come up with a Team Name and Topic! Dress for Success!

 Team Competition

    • Time allowance 2 hours for any breeds of any size!

General Information

We encourage you to attend all contestants zoom meeting on at 7pm December 5th, 2024. That will be a great opportunity to learn about the rules and ask questions. Set yourself for success and get all info you need before the competition

Bathing Area Info

 Bathing Facility will be available from 5am till 9:30am by sign up only. Only the groomer and one assistant may come at a time, per slot. There will be up to 15 minutes allowed in the tub.  Bathing spots are limited. Please be respectful to everyone’s time. 

  • Competitors must provide a grooming loop, products, and towels.

  • Please bring only one dog at a time for bathing and drying.

  • Only dogs that are part of the competition may be washed in the salon.

  • Personal tables or cages are not allowed in the bathing area; there simply is not enough space.

  • You must clean up after yourself! Vacuum or gather-up and dispose of all hair when finished and sanitize the tables with the provided cleaner.

Tables

We highly encourage you to bring grooming tables.

We will have a limited number of tables available for renting on a first-come first-served basis:

  • Portable tables $10

  • Electric/Hydraulic tables $15

Dogs & Holding Area

Please only bring the dogs you are competing with.

There will be limited space available for the dogs that participate in the grooming competitions only for those competitors that compete in multiple classes

 Procedures, Policies, & Protocals

    • Contestants must enter though The GroomFest VA site and provide the name registered to staff at check-in.

    • Be aware that check-in time may take place before the opening of GroomFest VA, please do not arrive earlier then the check-in time.

    • Competition check-in station opens 30min prior to contest start time. 

    • Contestants must bring their competition dog, and equipment to contest check-in station prior to entering the ring. 

    • Contestants will be assigned a table.

    • Check-in station closes 10 minutes prior to competition start time.

    • Contestants who have not checked in 10 minutes before start time, will not be permitted to compete. 

    • Dogs should be clean, dry, and free of matts and tangles.  Nails should be clipped and/or filed and ears cleaned.  Sanitary and pads may be clipped prior to competition.  All other grooming must take place during contest time frame, with exceptions as noted for poodles.

    • Must be of an age appropriate for a competitive environment. Suggested age is between 1 and 10 years. 

    • Must appear healthy, in good condition, and free of infectious diseases and parasites.

    • Must not show obvious signs of pregnancy or nursing.

    • Must NEVER be left unattended.

    • Must follow applicable vaccination regulations for city, county, state, and country hosting the competition.

  • Judge(s) will evaluate, confirm, and note the following:

    • Correct class

    • Sufficient coat growth and evaluate preparation

    • If pattern is pre-set

    • Contestant comments, such as, but not limited to: ear infections, missing coat, moles, scars, healing injuries, etc

    • Decorative objects, such as bows and scarves are not permitted in regular purebred classes

    • Coloring, other than to enhance the natural coat color of the dog, is prohibited in purebred classes

    • Hair extensions that are the same coat color of the dog are permitted and if used, must be applied during the competition time frame.

    • Products such as hair sprays and styling gels may be applied during the competition time frame.  Spray is limited to “freshening up” once time is called.  Re-shaping, such as that done on Kerry Blue jacket, shaping or patting coat into place utilizing water or product, or shaping a show poodle headpiece may not be done once time is called.  Hair spray is prohibited on poodle tie-ups prior to competition time frame and after time is called.  

    • Chalk, such as terrier chalk, may be applied prior to or during the competition time frame, to aid in hand stripping or enhance coat color.  It is prohibited to apply after time is called.

    • Contestants should remove hair, tools, and equipment from grooming table.

    • A comb should be placed on the table.

    • Contestants may comb their dogs after scissors down, prior to, and after judging.

    • Contestants may use finishing sprays to freshen up their dogs after scissors down, prior to and after judging, but ANY reshaping or styling with hairspray, products, or water is prohibited.

    • Contestants should stack and present their dog to the judge(s).

    • Overall uniformity of the trim.

    • Balance, symmetry, and style of the trim.

    • Purebred: adherence to correct breed profile.

    • Freestyle: ability of groomer to create the best possible profile according to body type, conformation, and coat.

    • Scissoring: plush appearance without scissor marks.

    • Hand stripping and carding: smooth natural appearance and proper technique.

    • Edges, such as cocker and poodle feet, removed, pattern created or followed, coat type, texture, quality, and quantity.

    • Camouflaging conformation faults and accentuating profile attributes.

    •  Post contest photos will be taken after technical evaluation has been completed.

    • The contestant should take their name tag and dog to the photo station and then return to their table and await further instruction.

    • Standing on tables or chairs.

    • Beverages NOT in spill proof containers.

    • Coaching by anyone, with the exception of mentors, at any time, during the competition time frame.

    • Visual, audio, or written instructions.

    • Smoking, flame devices.

    • Hair dryers.

    • Holding crates

    • Contestants must provide all of their own equipment, including, but not limited to: grooming loops, scissors, clippers, blades, brushes, etc. 

    • All personal equipment must removed from arena after each class.

    • All grooming tools are permitted, such as snap on combs.

    • Flat irons and curling irons are permitted.

    • Appropriate grooming attire and shoes should be worn at all times.

    • Open toe shoes are not permitted.

    • Contestants determined to be dressed inappropriately will not be permitted to compete.

    • Professional manner and attitude must be maintained at all times.

    • Contestants must maintain a safe styling station at all times.  Example: open scissors left on the table for the dog to step on would be considered an unsafe styling station.

    • Contestants must practice kind and safe handling techniques at all times.

    • Dogs must never be left unattended.

    • Contestants must apply technical skills with safety. 

    • Nicks, cuts, and clipper irritations are considered unsafe technical skill application and will be penalized.

    • Good sportsmanship must be displayed at all times.

    • Poor sportsmanship is displayed when a contestant shows disrespect to fellow competitors, judge, contest dog, staff, sponsors, and spectators.  

    • Professional conduct is also carried into the care and responsibility of your contest dog and the hotel grounds, rooms, and property. 


    • Contestants may receive warnings or notifications of disqualifications for rule infractions as described. 

    • Judging panel will determine if rule infraction(s) result in disqualification, depending upon severity and cause. 

    • Awards will not be withheld unless the judging panel determines there is a disqualifying factor.

Meet Our Judges

  • Guzal Adekoje is the owner of a mobile pet grooming company and upscale grooming salon in Northern Virginia, USA. Originally from Uzbekistan, she found her destiny in the United States in 2003, when she moved with just one suitcase and $200 in her pocket. Not knowing even one person in a new country she built herself up to become a well-known business owner, groomer and speaker in the USA. Guzal is a multiple international award-winning pet stylist, national certified groomer and AKC certified dog groomer who competes in the grooming contests in the USA and abroad. Her most recent international dog grooming competition was in Barcelona, Spain in November 2023 where she took silver in a huge international class competing with groomers from Korea, China, Spain, UK, France, Amsterdam and other countries. She is a well-rounded groomer and earned multiple awards in poodle class, all other pure breeds, sporting, handstripping and freestyle classes. She is an open level competitor with a lot of knowledge ready to share. Guzal loves to learn and teach. She continuously improves her skills and shares her knowledge with others. Guzal has a very giving personality and loves helping people and animals.

    In addition to being a groomer, Guzal is also a very talented and experienced teacher. Her passion is in developing methodology that makes learning easy and fun. She believes that NOT all fits all. Guzal has developed multilevel grooming educational courses to accommodate all students with different skill levels and learning styles. Her hands on educational program focuses on individualized approach. She offers small group classes, private lessons, seminars and webinars.

    She has degrees in teaching and global affairs with a concentration in business. In the past she worked both with kids and college students. She says her passion is in grooming, her love is in teaching and her head is in business.

    Guzal recently launched her own line of scissors, tools, accessories and grooming apparel LaFursion. Guzal is a very fashionable groomer. She believes that groomers are artists and deserve to look and feel great while creating their masterpieces. LaFursion is a line that not only quality, but it is uniquely designed to make groomers feel special while working.

  • Jennifer Anders has always had a passion for working with animals. Anders attended Virginia Intermont College, majoring in Horsemanship and Business. After years of training, both horses and riders, Anders decided to turn her focus to canines. Anders is graduate of Nash Academy of Animal Arts, a certified Nash Instructor, and a certified groomer through the National Dog Groomers Association. Located in southwest Virginia, Anders began a mobile pet styling business in 2011, and within 6 months had established a waiting list. In 2012, Anders entered the competition ring, where she continued to compete and learn the craft. In 2016, Anders opened a stand alone salon, and less than a year later,  the salon was relocated to a larger facility. In 2017, Anders accepted an invitation to be on the USA Model Dog Team. Anders took 2nd place on the International Live Dog Team, in addition to earning a World Championship Title for Model Dog Purebred and Creative Model Dog. In 2018, she was named Captain of the Virginia State Grooming Team. Anders’ experience and knowledge base, allowed her to earn a Best in Class award at an international level in South Korea among several other awards.  Anders began breeding and showing poodles in 2018 and has finished multiple AKC & UKC Champions, Grand Champions and Best in show dogs. Anders has not stopped here, she is expanding  her breeding program and currently has her breed by toy poodle in the number 4 spot for year end ranking in UKC.

  • Emily Shannon started her competition career with model dogs in 2020 due to not having a real dog of her own. She has found an obsession and artistic output with being able to create whatever she puts her mind to with model dogs. Emily caught the competition bug and started competing with live dogs in 2021. Since then she has won multiple awards in both model and live dogs including a Best in Show in model dogs and being in the Best in Show line up for live dogs. Emily was the captain of the USA Model Dog team for two years and is now currently helping model dog competitions become more known through the North American Model Dog Club.
